Living Form: Regenerative Futures Driven by Morphology

自然科学の概念として生まれた形態学は、科学と芸術の接点が形成される過程で芸術諸学に影響を与えてきた。ここでの「形態」は、内的自然と外的環境の相互作用によって原型を保ちながら変化し続けるものとして捉えられ、近年、リジェネラティブ・デザイン（環境再生型デザイン）が人間・自然・人工物の共進化を目指す中で再評価されている。気候変動への適応が求められる今、都市を環境と動的・有機的に関わり合う存在として再定義できないか。本セッションでは、都市形態に焦点を当て、学際的な視点からリジェネラティブ時代の形態学の可能性を探る。
Morphology, which originated as a concept of natural science, has influenced various art studies in the process of forming an interface between science and art. "Form" here is seen as something that continues to change while maintaining its archetype (through interaction of internal nature and external environment), and has been reevaluated in recent years as regenerative design aims for the co-evolution of humans, nature, and artifacts. Now that adaptation to climate change is urgent, how can we redefine urban form as a dynamic and organic entity that interacts with the environment? With a focus on urban form, this session will explore possibilities of morphology in the regenerative age from an interdisciplinary perspective.

This international workshop explores environmentally adaptive spatial design through the framework of Ecological Subregions—localized catchments that interact dynamically with broader river basin systems. Focusing on the Tone River Basin, Japan’s largest, the program engages domestic and international students in scenario-based design grounded in socio-hydrological perspectives.
The key site is the Inbanuma Swamp Catchment, a historically significant inland wetland once directly connected to the Tone River. Inbanuma nurtured a distinctive water-based culture shaped by the interaction between its autonomous hydrological system and its dynamic linkage to the broader delta system. This cultural landscape emerged from the balance of localized water management and large-scale river dynamics. In recent decades, however, water control in Inbanuma has become dominated by engineering infrastructure, weakening both cultural ties to water and hydrological connectivity with the wider basin. These disconnections now hinder adaptive and resilient spatial planning. The workshop adopts a socio-hydrological approach, using historical references to read landscape transformations and inform the design of future scenarios. Participants will develop strategies that integrate engineering-based and nature-based approaches while carefully balancing the two, exploring ways to reconnect ecological subregions with broader river dynamics. Outcomes will be presented at an international conference in Tsukuba Science City, contributing to global discussions on integrated flood risk management and landscape-based planning under climate change. 2025年9月18日（木）〜9月26日（金）

In recent years, flood management paradigms have shifted from "flood control" — treating floods solely as disasters to be prevented — to "flood adaptation" — accepting floods while minimizing human impacts. This workshop explores the concept of "Living-with-Floods" by investigating traditional water villages that have developed sophisticated relationships with flooding through generations of accumulated wisdom. Participants will develop innovative architectural, regional, and environmental design proposals for three water villages in Vietnam's Hue Lagoon region, creating adaptive strategies that respond to future flood scenarios.
